Chapter 11 Camp Kookooskoos
第十一 库库斯库斯夏令营
Camp Kookooskoos was on a small lake, deep in thewoods of Ontario.
库库斯库斯夏令营座落在安大略森林深处的一个小湖边。
There were no summer cottages on the lake, nooutboard motors, no roads with cars rushing by.
这里没有依湖而建的消夏别墅，没有带舷外发动机的汽艇，也没有供汽车驱驶的车道。
It was a wilderness lake, just right for boys.
这是一个荒野的湖，最适合男孩们来玩。
Mr. Bea一ver left Sam and Louis at the end of a dirt road,
比弗先生让萨姆和路易斯在泥土路的尽头下了车，
and they finished their journey to camp by canoe.
然后他们又乘上独木舟，划到了营地，这才算结束了他们的旅程。
Sam sat in the stern and paddled, Louis stood in the bow and looked straight ahead.
一路上，萨姆坐在船尾划桨，路易斯则只是站在船头注视着前方。
The camp consisted of a big log cabin where everybody ate,
这个营地由一个吃饭用的大木屋，
seven tents where the boys and the counselors slept,
七座供男孩与辅导员们睡觉的帐篷，
a dock out front, and a privy out back.
一个建在前面的船坞，一个盖在后面的厕所组成。
The woods closed in all around, but there was a bare spot that had been made into a tenniscourt,
这里四周都为森林所环绕，其中只有一块被用作网球场的开阔地，
and there were plenty of canoes in which to take trips to other lakes.
还有一个堆放着许多可以独木舟的地方，这些独木舟是用来在别的湖上旅行的。
There were about forty boys.
这里大约有四十个男孩。
When Sam's canoe grounded on the sandy beach next to the camp dock,
当萨姆的独木舟停靠到营地码头边的沙滩时，
Louis stepped ashore wearing his slate, his chalk pencil, and his trumpet.
路易斯带着他的石板，他的石笔，他的小号走上了岸。
About twenty boys rushed down to the landing to see what was going on.
码头上跑来大约二十个男孩，都想看看发生了什么事情。
They could hardly believe their eyes.
眼前的一切让他们几乎不能相信他们的眼睛了。
"Hey, look what's here!" one of the boys yelled.
“嘿，看那是什么!”一个男孩叫。
"A bird!" cried another. "Look at the size of him!"
“一只鸟!”另一个说。“瞧他的个头儿!”
Everybody crowded around Louis, wanting to get a close look at the new camper.
每个人都挤到了路易斯的周围，想更清楚地瞧瞧这位新营员。
Sam had to push some of the boys back, to keep Louis from getting crushed.
萨姆把几个男孩推开，不让路易斯被他们挤着。
"Take it easy, will you?" Sam implored.
“慢点来，好吗?”萨姆恳求。
That evening after supper, the director of the camp, Mr. Brickle,
那天晚饭后，夏令营指导员布里克先生
built a big campfire in front of the main lodge.
在大木屋前生起了营火。
The boys gathered around.
男孩们都围聚在一起。
They sang songs and toasted marshmallows and swatted mosquitoes.
他们唱着歌，嚼着果汁软糖，还猛拍蚊子。
Sometimes you couldn't understand the words of a song
有时，你根本听不清歌里唱的是什么，
because the boys sang with marshmallows in their mouths.
因为男孩们在唱歌时嘴里还塞着果汁软糖呢。
Louis did not join the group. He stood by himself at a little distance.
路易斯没和他们在一起 .他独自站在一个离他们稍远的地方。
